lol OK, I don't know if anyone posted anything like this before, but hey, I'll give it a shot. The other day, my friends and i were discussing stereotypes. I find it really interesting that to some people, stereotypes are just that, stereotypes. But to other people, they take it so seriously that they take it to the point of racism. I mean, my friends makes cracks about me eating rice and stuff all the time, and I don't mind that, because sometimes it's funny. But those kinds of stereotypes, I don't mind. But there are a lot of people out there who makes up stereotypes that are really offensive to that race of people and that's what I don't get. And anyway, it also makes me mad that those people who says offensive things, when you tell them of a stereotype about their race, they get so angry and pissed at you. That's just really hippocritical to me. lol. What I hate more is stupid stereotypes. lmao. I told someone that I was going to eat Roman noodles and they were like, just like a typical Asian. I'm like, what the hell? Why is it that eating Roman noodles makes you a typical Asian? lol, so yeah. This is my rant for the day!

was it warren? lmao, sorry, but i know what you mean. like it's different when you know the people cracking jokes, but some people will actually believe it. like my friends who know me and i know really well, we'll joke around and they'll say i'm a suicide bomber or a terrorist cuz my mom's family is muslim. i know their kidding, but some people have a bad view of muslims after sept. 11, really narrow minded people of course, but they'll believe it...i don't believe that all black people don't have jobs, go around shooting and raping people and can't support families, but i have a sick sence of humor and will say shit like that just because, but only to people again, who know i'm kidding. lol hope people don't think i'm a true bitch for saying all that, but yeah, that's me. lmao

I will say I'm guilty of that sometimes, but it's because I grew up with such narrow minded people. I'm getting better, though.

lol. Like everyone has said, it's a question of context and interpretation. A very difficult thing to get right unless you know the person very well indeed, so yep, best save it for our friends who know we joke. Funnily enough Janelle my niece and I were talking about people's perceptions of muslims just today. When right wing christians commit acts of aggression, (as has happened), nothing is said about what religion these people are affiliated with, but if an "extremist muslim group" acts out aggressively, then that's what it is according to the popular media, an act of aggression by an extremist muslim group. So a lot of it is down to what they call moral panics, in social science. A couple of people from a certain group do something bad, the media gets a hold of it, and blammo! the public read and listen to the media, and we have a more intrenched form of prejudice. Anyway I didnt' mean to go on like that sorry, but you get my point lol.

Cheers,
Simon
